How To Purify Water In An Emergency

In an emergency situation we don't always have access to clean drinking water, however, there are several ways to purify water to make it safer for consumption. Here are a few methods:

  1. Boiling: Boiling water is the simplest and most effective way to kill bacteria, viruses, and parasites that may be present in the water. Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, and then let it cool before drinking.

  2. Chlorination: Chlorine can be used to kill bacteria and viruses in water. Consult with your local experts to see how many drops are appropriate in your area per gallon of water. Be sure to use regular bleach without any additives, and do not exceed the recommended amount.

  3. Distillation: Distillation involves boiling water and then collecting the steam, which is then condensed back into liquid form. This process removes most contaminants, including bacteria, viruses, and heavy metals. However, it can be time-consuming and requires specialized equipment.

  4. Filtration: A portable water filter can be used to remove bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants from water. Look for a filter that is designed for emergency situations, and be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.

  5. Solar Disinfection: Also known as SODIS, this method involves filling a clear plastic or glass container with water and exposing it to the sun for at least six hours. The UV radiation from the sun kills bacteria and viruses, making the water safe to drink. However, this method may not be effective in areas with low sunlight or during cloudy weather.

It's important to note that these methods are intended for emergency situations and may not remove all contaminants, so it's best to use multiple methods if possible. If alternative sources of clean water exist, use those, and always consult with a professional before attempting to purify drinking water.
